- The Methodist Church, Ghana has opened its doors to offer temporary housing for individuals displaced by the severe floods affecting parts of Accra and Tema, amidst the city dealing with significant flooding and a large fire at a rubber factory.
The Most Rev. Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, expressed sympathy, empathy, and solidarity in a message, extending prayers and thoughts to all those impacted by the floods and advising ministers to provide tangible and physical assistance to those in distress.
In a public statement, the Presiding Bishop conveyed concern for those affected by the floods in Accra and called for swift assistance for those stranded or who have suffered losses. He urged ministers to offer any available resources to support those in need, including offering church premises as temporary shelter.
The church’s involvement comes as extensive rainfall starting on June 27 submerged entire neighborhoods, causing power outages and leaving residents stranded. Traffic congestion has increased around the Tetteh Quashie interchange, and flooding has disrupted travel along various routes in Accra and Tema.
The National Disaster Management Organization has verified that flooding is widespread in Accra and Tema, affecting several areas severely. Efforts to address the situation are underway, with emergency response teams being deployed and relief supplies being distributed by the Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei.
Various regions such as Tantra, N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, Accra–Kasoa stretch, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange have been impacted by the floods.
Residents in flood-prone communities are moving their belongings to safer places as water levels rise, and the government is ramping up its assistance efforts. The church’s gesture of providing shelter is a source of hope for those in dire need, symbolizing a refuge in troubled times.
