Uruguay players will individually make their way back home at their own cost after being eliminated from the World Cup. The team will not be flying together on a charter flight as originally planned, but will be taking separate commercial flights back to Montevideo.
The AUF, which oversees Uruguayan soccer, made the decision to cancel the charter flight that was supposed to transport the players from their training base in Mexico back home, as reported by El Pais newspaper and Tenfield TV network. This means the players will not be returning as a group but will be arriving on different flights.
Uruguay had high hopes heading into their match against Spain on June 26 but ended up drawing with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, resulting in a must-win situation in Guadalajara. Unfortunately, Spain scored first due to a goalkeeper mistake in the 42nd minute, and Uruguay couldn’t recover, losing 1-0 and being knocked out of the tournament.
After the defeat, Uruguay’s coach Marcelo Bielsa expressed his disappointment, stating that his achievements during his time with the team will be overshadowed by the lack of results. Bielsa, a 70-year-old Argentine, will not continue as the national team coach, and Uruguay will now begin the search for a new manager as they prepare to host a match in the 2030 World Cup, marking the tournament’s 100th anniversary.
