Mary Dickson: Supporting mothers in entrepreneurship

What started as a small way to help her family has now become a strong network that supports women who are managing both being a mom and running a business.

In September 2015, Mary Abena Serwaa Dickson had what she calls an “aha moment.”

For many years, she helped her older sister, who runs a business and has two children, by taking care of the kids whenever her sister had to travel for work. In those moments, she experienced directly how being a mother and pursuing ambition are connected.

She said, “I realized that as a mother who still wants to chase her dreams, you need a lot of support to keep moving forward,” during an interview with The Mirror in Accra on Tuesday.

That realization led to the creation of her platform for women entrepreneurs, which began almost right away. She didn’t hesitate and set up social media accounts and a blog, where she shared stories about moms who were running businesses and managing their lives. At that time, the main aim was just to connect.

At first, the platform, WeMompreneurs, was all about storytelling—it made a place where women and moms could realize they weren’t alone. As the community got bigger, its purpose also grew.

At first, my intention was to share stories about mothers. When one person shares her story, another mother sees it and realizes she’s not alone.

But over time, she noticed something deeper.

Over time, I came to understand that besides the experiences, mothers also needed to be educated. She said, “They needed resources, something real they could touch and hold.”

Based on her own experience in a small business management position, she started adding entrepreneurship training to the platform. By 2017, her work had moved into digital education, helping mothers learn new tools and methods that could change how they run their businesses.

Mrs. Dickson focused on making things easy to understand and access, whether she was teaching about social media marketing or showing people how to use tools like Canva. As time passed, she started to notice the effects.

Many women are now using these tools to make money, run their businesses, and achieve financial independence. Some even return years later to express their gratitude.
