The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has instructed all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to stay actively involved in flood response operations until the situations are brought under control.
This command comes after floods hit various parts of the Greater Accra Region due to heavy rainfall on Monday, leading to flooded roads and neighborhoods, causing transportation disruptions, and displacing some residents.
She emphasized that the aftermath of the intense rains on Monday calls for strong leadership and prompt action.
In a written statement, the minister directed the MMDCEs to promptly mobilize their teams, including officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other technical experts, to heighten rescue efforts in their areas.
The MMDCEs were tasked with rescuing individuals stranded by floods, evaluating the extent of the damage, and providing immediate assistance to affected residents.
The minister expressed her sympathy for the affected residents and reiterated that their safety is the top priority for the government.
She encouraged residents to be cautious and stay indoors during heavy rainfall, advising them to avoid flood-prone areas, drains, and fast-flowing waters.
Furthermore, she urged parents to ensure the safety of their children by keeping them away from floodwaters and flooded roads.
Ms. Ocloo assured flood victims that the Regional Coordinating Council, along with the local authorities and emergency response agencies, would continue working diligently to protect lives, help those in need, and support affected communities.
