Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been urged to return to Ghana and account for his stewardship by Commissioner Joseph Whittal of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). Whittal has promised to defend Ofori-Atta in the event that he is subjected to unfair treatment upon his return.

“From the first day of your appointment, accountability is expected. I want to reassure him that CHRAJ will stand up for him if his rights are abused.

On January 23, Mr. Whittal declared, “He must come home and speak to the period he managed this country.”

When members of the pressure organization Arise Ghana came to the Commissioner’s office to ask for his assistance in their demand for Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return, the Commissioner said these things.

“Accountability for handling public resources is non-negotiable,” he declared.

After formally petitioning U.S. officials, Arise Ghana has temporarily halted its picketing at the U.S. Embassy in Accra.

The one-week suspension is meant to give American authorities time to respond. The group has threatened to start protesting again if it doesn’t hear back from the government about the former finance minister’s prompt return.

For four days in a row, demonstrators gathered outside the embassy, calling on American officials to work with Ghanaian institutions to secure the former finance minister’s return.

According to the group, the demonstration was intended to further their demands that Mr. Ofori-Atta “return to Ghana to face justice” and that accountability be maintained.
