The Social Security and National Insurance Fund (SSNIT) celebrated the 100th birthday of the country’s oldest retiree, Madam Ima Zenabu Dagomba, and took the opportunity to encourage informal sector workers to join the national pension scheme.
Madam Dagomba was born on July 1, 1926, retired from active duty on January 31, 1992, and received her first SSNIT retirement benefit in March 1993. She has been with the scheme for 33 years and 4 months, making her the longest serving SSNIT retiree in Ghana. News content targeted at Ghana.
Dagomba expressed his gratitude for SSNIT’s continued support over the years, saying that the monthly pension allows him to live with dignity.“We would like to thank SSNIT for their support. Without SSNIT, my life would not have been easy.
Thanks to SSNIT, I can feed myself and pay my bills,” she says. Speaking at the meeting, SSNIT Deputy CEO for Operations and Benefits Adam Salley said retirees remain one of the Fund’s most important stakeholders and should be recognized for their contribution to national development.
Mr Salih explained that the decision to hold the ceremony at Madam Dagomba’s home rather than a hotel was intentional, saying it would bring SSNIT closer to the community and bring the benefits of the pension scheme to more people, especially those working in the informal sector. “Most of the people gathered here today are from the informal sector.They are beginning to understand that SSNIT is for them, not just formal sector workers. “We want them to become donors today so they can retire tomorrow with peace of mind,” he says.
He said SSNIT already has a recruitment program for self-employed workers and continues to attract tradesmen, artisans, farmers and other workers through regular support activities. He stressed that while discussions to improve pensions in the informal sector are ongoing at national level, trust funds already offer products designed to meet the needs of the self-employed.
Mr Salih said SSNIT, in collaboration with hospital trusts and the National Health Insurance Agency (NHIA), introduced telemedicine services to improve healthcare access for retirees. He said the service will allow retirees to contact a doctor by phone from anywhere in the country without having to visit a medical facility.
“If you ask 10 retirees about their biggest problem, nine are likely to cite health. “We believe this intervention will make health care more accessible to them,” he said.
