From the several caches of weapons and ammunition seized from the Kantanka private security company, which was involved in the shooting incident at Kwabenya last Sunday, some of the weapons were registered, while others were not, according to the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.
“In the course of our operation, we have seized several caches of arms and ammunition.
I’ve seen side arms, pump action weapons, and a lot of ammunition.Some of these weapons are registered, while others are not.All of this is in violation of the regulations that govern private security organisations.This is why we have decided to revoke their licence, and we are now conducting a thorough investigation to understand the reasons behind these actions,” the minister stated in an interview broadcasted by Joy FM on Tuesday morning [June 23, 2026], as reported by Graphic Online.
He also mentioned that he was aware of a court injunction that was in place to prevent any ceremony related to the selection of a successor for the Christo Asafo Church following the death of Apostle Kwadwo Safo in September 2025.
As a result, police officers were stationed at the church premises to ensure that no such ceremony took place, as part of the security measures aimed at preventing any potential disorder.
However, the organisers bypassed the police by moving the event to a private residence located in Kwabenya, Accra, which happens to be the home of Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena.
Speaking in the same radio interview, the minister said that the estate of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo was a matter between the family, but the events that took place over the weekend were very unfortunate.
“There was a court injunction preventing any activity at the church, and the police were on the scene, with the regional police command present in significant numbers,” he added.
“It was then reported that they had changed the venue, and the police were trying to locate them.
When this incident occurred, it was very unfortunate because our belief was that they would be law–abiding and resolve the matter through the legal process.But that did not happen.”
The minister further explained that the private security company had specific guidelines, including a prescribed uniform and clear instructions that firearms should not be used.
He added that they noticed the company was using a different uniform and employing firearms, which violated the regulations that established the private security organisation.
As a result, the licence of the company was revoked, and an investigation was launched to ensure that appropriate punitive actions are taken.
The minister said that in addition to the nine individuals currently in custody, including Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena, several firearms such as pump action guns and pistols have been confiscated.
He disclosed that among the seized weapons, some are registered, while others are not, which constitutes a legal violation.
