More than 7,700 households have been forced to leave their homes, and seven individuals are still unaccounted for after severe floods on Monday. The Minister of the Interior disclosed that Ghana experienced its highest monthly rainfall ever in June 2026.
During a speech in Parliament on June 30, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak mentioned that the heavy rain affected numerous communities in the capital, disrupting daily life and impacting thousands of residents in 18 different areas.

– 25 communities were affected by the floods, with several Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies suffering extensive damage.
– The hardest-hit areas included Ga East, Ledzokuku, Ayawaso Central, Ga Central, and others.
Breaking down the data, the Minister provided details on the number of displaced individuals in various locations. For instance, Krowor had the highest displacement with 6,500 people from 1,300 homes affected.
The Minister also highlighted that Ghana saw its wettest month on record in June 2026, with 593.2 millimetres of rainfall, the highest monthly total since records began in 1995. The heavy rainfall on the day of the floods alone reached 169.2 millimetres, ranking as the fourth-highest daily rainfall on record.
Although human actions like improper waste disposal and building in water passages were contributing factors to the flooding, the Minister emphasized that the sheer amount of rainfall would have overwhelmed drainage systems regardless.
Emergency response teams are currently engaged in rescue and relief operations in the Greater Accra Region. President Mahama has authorized the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support urgent relief efforts.
