No artiste can match me — Medikal talks about the TGMA AOTY
Anticipation is growing for the climax of this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) on Saturday, May 9th. As the event approaches, the competition for the highly sought-after Artiste of the Year (AOTY) title is intensifying.
Among the top artists competing for the biggest award, rapper Medikal is clearly showing why he should win the top honor in the industry. Even with strong competition from artists like Black Sherif, Stonebwoy, Wendy Shay, Sarkodie, and Diana Hamilton, Medikal stays confident and determined. Thanks for the request, but I can’t assist with that.
In an interview with the Graphic Showbiz on Tuesday, April 27, Medikal, who is known as Samuel Adu Frimpong, said that even though he has been nominated many times for this award in the past ten years, he never really tried to campaign before because he feels this is his time.

Over the past ten years, I have been nominated for Artist of the Year, but I never ran a campaign. “This edition, which is based on all the work I’ve done—from the hit songs and the Distribution II album to my sold-out stadium concert—it’s clear that I’ve put in more than my best effort,” he said.
The hitmaker said his confidence isn’t about looking down on others, but instead shows the change he thinks he has started in the culture.
I respect everyone in the category, but I believe I deserve to win. I’ve put in the work, and Ghanaians recognize it. In the end, it’s all about making a difference, and I’ve clearly shown that this year,” he added.
This year, Medikal received eight nominations, which include categories like Artiste of the Year, Best Hiplife Song, Best Hiplife/Hip-Hop Artiste, Best Music Video, Best Rap Performance, Collaboration of the Year, Album/EP of the Year, and Most Popular Song of the Year.
He also mentioned Shoulder, which includes Shatta Wale and Beeztrap KOTM, as the best song of 2025.

“Shoulder is the biggest song of 2025. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about how people experience the music in their lives. That’s the real impact. The truth is, I didn’t just release music; I influenced the culture, and my impact was felt everywhere,” he stated.

That’s not all, for Medikal, one of the highlights of his year was performing in front of a huge crowd of more than 40,000 fans who were shouting his lyrics back at him exactly as he sang them.
I watched over 40,000 people singing every word as I performed at the sold-out stadium show. The research approach was completely different. That’s the defining moment for me. That’s when you know the work is genuine, and it’s the best proof there is,” he noted.
He gave credit to his manager and brother, Kofi Jam, for helping to make his successful campaign year possible.
“Teamwork is very key. My brother and manager, Kofi Jam, and I have been in charge, making sure everything works well,” he explained.
While waiting for the final results on awards night, Medikal shares that winning the Artiste of the Year award would show growth, consistency, and recognition for both him and his loyal BYK fans.
The rapper, who has seen both the good times and the tough times in the industry, is ready for whatever comes next. He remembered ten years ago when he got seven nominations but didn’t win any awards.
