President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the demolition of the aging Gordon-Guggisberg maternity block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, labeling it a “death trap” that endangers mothers and healthcare workers. He has initiated the procurement process for a new maternity block to replace the existing one.
– The President disclosed this decision during the inauguration of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
During the event on July 9, 2026, President Mahama emphasized that replacing the old maternity block is part of a broader strategy to enhance specialized healthcare services and upgrade facilities for patients.
– He mentioned that the deteriorating state of the Gordon-Guggisberg maternity block has rendered it hazardous for patients and staff, necessitating its removal for safety reasons.
President Mahama highlighted that the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as Mahama Cares, has expanded its focus beyond merely financing treatment expenses. The fund will now support the development of specialized healthcare facilities, procurement and upkeep of medical equipment, training of healthcare professionals, and patient care.
– Additionally, the recruitment and training of 500 critical care nurses have been approved by the Cabinet, with the training already underway at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and planned for extension to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Furthermore, the establishment of Ghana Medical Equipment Services Limited, a subsidiary of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, aims to ensure proper maintenance and replacement of specialized medical equipment in public health facilities to prevent wastage of resources.
– Biomedical engineers will be employed to maintain equipment and replace outdated or irreparable machines, creating a sustainable model for healthcare equipment management.
President Mahama affirmed the government’s commitment to investing in healthcare infrastructure to enhance specialized healthcare services nationwide, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the health and well-being of the people.
– The commissioning of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory will enhance Ghana’s capacity to diagnose and treat complex cardiovascular and neurovascular conditions, expanding specialist cardiac care at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
