Kenkubii Warns Emerging Artistes Against Rushing Into Record Label Deals

Singer and songwriter Kenkubii has cautioned emerging musicians to carefully evaluate record label contracts before committing to them, urging artistes to prioritise independence and long-term career sustainability over quick visibility.

According to him, many record label agreements are designed to favour the label at the expense of the artiste, often resulting in the exploitation of creative work while restricting artistic freedom and future growth.

Kenkubii argued that a significant number of labels are driven largely by profit, with minimal concern for the personal and professional development of the musicians they sign. He noted that while labels often promise exposure and success, the reality can be limiting and damaging if artistes do not fully understand the terms they are agreeing to.

He cited the recent Kwesi Arthur situation as a cautionary example, pointing out how contractual arrangements that appear beneficial at the outset can later hinder an artiste’s progress and control over their own music.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Tuesday, February 3, Kenkubii emphasised the value of patience, education, and self-investment for up-and-coming artistes. He encouraged young musicians to take time to build their skills, understand the business side of music, and explore independent pathways that allow them to retain ownership of their craft.

According to him, developing one’s brand organically and maintaining creative control can ultimately lead to more fulfilling and sustainable careers in the music industry.
