Woman accused of misappropriating GH₵156,445 in susu contributions granted bail

A woman who is accused of diverting GH₵156,445 in susu contributions has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court. The accused, Martha Nana Esi Afful, faced charges of fraudulent breach of trust involving 35 traders. She denied the 35 counts of fraudulent breach of trust during her court appearance.

Judge Joseph Y. Kuunsong granted bail to Martha in the amount of GH₵200,000, requiring two sureties, with one surety being a public employee earning at least GH₵5,000 monthly. The case has been postponed until August 12, 2026.ing under the business name “ZOE,” collected susu contributions from traders in La, Accra, promising returns with interest after a period of one to three years. When contributors sought to withdraw their funds and interest in December 2025, Martha was unreachable, although she maintained contact with a few contributors via phone.

Despite efforts by contributors to recover the funds, totaling GH₵156,445, they were unsuccessful. Martha was eventually arrested on June 14, 2026, at a washing bay in Tse Addo following a complaint to the police.

In her statement to the police, Martha claimed to have relocated to Swedru in the Central Region after her husband’s death, making it challenging for contributors to reach her. She mentioned investing the funds in a waste collection business and requested time to repay the amount. The prosecution’s claims are still pending in court, and police investigations are ongoing.
