Felix Kwaky Ofosu, the Minister of State responsible for Presidential Spokesperson and Government Communications, stated that procedures were in place to replace Justice Sophia Akuffo, who left her post as a member of the Council of State in September 2025.<\/p>\n

At a news conference at the Presidency on Monday [June 15, 2026], Mr. Kwakye Ofosu confirmed media rumors of the resignation and stated that President John Mahama has subsequently accepted it.<\/p>\n

The procedures to replace her were in progress “as we speak, and therefore in due course, a replacement will be announced for Justice Sophia Akuffo.”<\/p>\n

The Minister of State\u00a0responsible<\/span>\u00a0for Government Communications and\u00a0serving<\/span>\u00a0as the Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwaky Ofosu,\u00a0stated<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0efforts<\/span>\u00a0are\u00a0currently<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0progress<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0identify<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0replacement<\/span>\u00a0for Justice Sophia Akuffo, who\u00a0left<\/span>\u00a0her\u00a0role<\/span>\u00a0as a\u00a0member<\/span>\u00a0of the Council of State in September 2025.<\/span>

He\u00a0added<\/span>\u00a0that the\u00a0procedures<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0appointing<\/span>\u00a0her\u00a0replacement<\/span>\u00a0are\u00a0already<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0motion<\/span>, “as we\u00a0speak<\/span>,” and that a\u00a0new<\/span>\u00a0appointment<\/span>\u00a0will be\u00a0made<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0due<\/span>\u00a0time<\/span>\u00a0for Justice Sophia Akuffo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nKwakye Ofosu\u00a0stated<\/span>\u00a0at the Monday\u00a0press<\/span>\u00a0briefing<\/span>, “I can\u00a0confirm<\/span>\u00a0that Justice Sophia A.B.<\/span>Akuffo has\u00a0resigned<\/span>\u00a0from her\u00a0position<\/span>\u00a0as a\u00a0member<\/span>\u00a0of the Council of State.<\/span>She\u00a0submitted<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0letter<\/span>\u00a0in September 2025 to the President\u00a0indicating<\/span>\u00a0her\u00a0desire<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0resign<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u00a0explained<\/span>\u00a0that the\u00a0reason<\/span>\u00a0for her\u00a0resignation<\/span>\u00a0was not\u00a0disclosed<\/span>.<\/span>
\nUpon\u00a0receiving<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0letter<\/span>, the President was\u00a0required<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0accept<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0resignation<\/span>.<\/span>However<\/span>, at the\u00a0request<\/span>\u00a0of the Council of State, the President was\u00a0asked<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0delay<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0acceptance<\/span>, as they\u00a0wanted<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0speak<\/span>\u00a0with Justice Akuffo to\u00a0understand<\/span>\u00a0if there\u00a0were<\/span>\u00a0any\u00a0unresolved<\/span>\u00a0grievances<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0influenced<\/span>\u00a0her\u00a0decision<\/span>, and whether they could be\u00a0addressed<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nKwakye Ofosu\u00a0added<\/span>, “They [the Council of State]\u00a0got<\/span>\u00a0back<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0said<\/span>\u00a0they had\u00a0engaged<\/span>\u00a0with her and,\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0far<\/span>\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0they were\u00a0concerned<\/span>, the\u00a0resignation<\/span>\u00a0could be\u00a0accepted<\/span>.<\/span>So<\/span>\u00a0the President has\u00a0formally<\/span>\u00a0accepted<\/span>\u00a0her\u00a0resignation<\/span>, and she is\u00a0no<\/span>\u00a0longer<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0member<\/span>\u00a0of the Council of State.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0law<\/span>\u00a0outlines<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0procedures<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0replacing<\/span>\u00a0her, and\u00a0so<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0due<\/span>\u00a0course<\/span>, a\u00a0replacement<\/span>\u00a0will be\u00a0announced<\/span>\u00a0for Justice Sophia Akuffo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Justice Sophia Akuffo was a\u00a0member<\/span>\u00a0of the Council of State in her\u00a0capacity<\/span>\u00a0as a\u00a0former<\/span>\u00a0Chief Justice.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0held<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0position<\/span>\u00a0of Chief Justice from 2017 to 2020 and was one of the 31\u00a0members<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0current<\/span>\u00a0Council of State, an\u00a0advisory<\/span>\u00a0body<\/span>\u00a0chaired<\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0former<\/span>\u00a0Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier<\/span>\u00a0in the\u00a0year<\/span>, she\u00a0clarified<\/span>\u00a0that she was not\u00a0representing<\/span>\u00a0the Judiciary on the Council of State, but was\u00a0serving<\/span>\u00a0in her\u00a0own<\/span>\u00a0right<\/span>\u00a0as a\u00a0former<\/span>\u00a0Chief Justice, in\u00a0accordance<\/span>\u00a0with the 1992 Constitution, which\u00a0stipulates<\/span>\u00a0that a\u00a0former<\/span>\u00a0Chief Justice should be a\u00a0member<\/span>\u00a0of the Council.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0departure<\/span>\u00a0followed<\/span>\u00a0her\u00a0dissenting<\/span>\u00a0stance<\/span>\u00a0during a Council of State\u00a0meeting<\/span>\u00a0in April 2025, when the\u00a0body<\/span>\u00a0voted<\/span>\u00a0on whether a\u00a0prima<\/span>\u00a0facie<\/span>\u00a0case<\/span>\u00a0had been\u00a0established<\/span>\u00a0against a\u00a0petition<\/span>\u00a0seeking<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0removal<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0then<\/span>\u00a0Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0later<\/span>\u00a0appeared<\/span>\u00a0before the\u00a0Article<\/span>\u00a0146\u00a0committee<\/span>\u00a0at the\u00a0request<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0then<\/span>–suspended<\/span>\u00a0Chief Justice Torkornoo to\u00a0testify<\/span>\u00a0in her\u00a0defence<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an\u00a0interview<\/span>\u00a0in September 2025, Justice Sophia Akuffo\u00a0publicly<\/span>\u00a0criticized<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0proceedings<\/span>,\u00a0arguing<\/span>\u00a0that Justice Torkornoo had not\u00a0received<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0fair<\/span>\u00a0hearing<\/span>.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0described<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0process<\/span>\u00a0as a “treason<\/span>\u00a0trial<\/span>” and\u00a0warned<\/span>\u00a0that it had\u00a0weakened<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0judiciary<\/span>.<\/span>
\nShe\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0contended<\/span>\u00a0that the\u00a0allegations<\/span>\u00a0against Torkornoo\u00a0lacked<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0severity<\/span>\u00a0needed<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0justify<\/span>\u00a0removing<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0head<\/span>\u00a0of a\u00a0justice<\/span>\u00a0institution<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
