Danquah was first formally floated during the tenure of <strong data-start=\"1743\" data-end=\"1791\">former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo<\/strong>, himself a prominent intellectual descendant of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition. The proposal immediately met <strong data-start=\"1914\" data-end=\"1934\">stiff resistance<\/strong> from sections of academia, civil society, and the political space\u2014particularly from groups aligned with the <strong data-start=\"2043\" data-end=\"2067\">Nkrumahist tradition<\/strong>, who viewed the move as politically motivated and historically revisionist.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2145\" data-end=\"2228\">For Mr. Annoh-Dompreh, however, the intensity of that resistance remains troubling.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2487\">\n<p data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2487\"><em data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2373\">\u201cI was struck when a call for the University of Ghana to be named after J.B. Danquah received a lot of apprehension and even condemnation,\u201d<\/em> he told Parliament.<br data-start=\"2393\" data-end=\"2396\" \/><em data-start=\"2398\" data-end=\"2487\">\u201cIt saddened my heart that such a personality would be treated the way he was treated.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2489\" data-end=\"2705\">His words reflect a broader frustration within certain intellectual and political circles that Dr. Danquah\u2019s contributions to Ghana\u2019s political and intellectual foundations have not received commensurate recognition.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2707\" data-end=\"2710\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2744\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Was_Dr_JB_Danquah\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"2715\" data-end=\"2744\">Who Was Dr. J.B. Danquah?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2746\" data-end=\"2864\">To understand why the proposal is so polarising, one must understand <strong data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"2863\">who J.B. Danquah was\u2014and what he represented<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2866\" data-end=\"2896\">Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah was:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"3054\">\n<li data-start=\"2897\" data-end=\"2914\">\n<p data-start=\"2899\" data-end=\"2914\">A philosopher<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2915\" data-end=\"2927\">\n<p data-start=\"2917\" data-end=\"2927\">A lawyer<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2943\">\n<p data-start=\"2930\" data-end=\"2943\">A historian<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2944\" data-end=\"2959\">\n<p data-start=\"2946\" data-end=\"2959\">A statesman<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"2985\">\n<p data-start=\"2962\" data-end=\"2985\">A nationalist thinker<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2986\" data-end=\"3054\">\n<p data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3054\">A founding member of the <strong data-start=\"3013\" data-end=\"3052\">United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3056\" data-end=\"3407\">He was among the earliest advocates for <strong data-start=\"3096\" data-end=\"3109\">self-rule<\/strong>, constitutionalism, rule of law, and civil liberties in colonial Ghana. Educated in Britain, Danquah combined Western philosophical traditions with deep African intellectual heritage, becoming one of the earliest African scholars to articulate nationalism as both a cultural and political project.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3409\" data-end=\"3564\">Perhaps most notably, <strong data-start=\"3431\" data-end=\"3479\">it was Danquah who proposed the name \u201cGhana\u201d<\/strong> for the newly independent nation, drawing inspiration from the ancient Ghana Empire.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3566\" data-end=\"3569\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"3571\" data-end=\"3619\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_University_of_Ghana_and_Its_Symbolism\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"3574\" data-end=\"3619\">The University of Ghana and Its Symbolism<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3621\" data-end=\"3763\">The <strong data-start=\"3625\" data-end=\"3648\">University of Ghana<\/strong>, founded in 1948 as the <strong data-start=\"3673\" data-end=\"3713\">University College of the Gold Coast<\/strong>, predates independence and is widely regarded as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3764\" data-end=\"3882\">\n<li data-start=\"3764\" data-end=\"3794\">\n<p data-start=\"3766\" data-end=\"3794\">Ghana\u2019s premier university<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3795\" data-end=\"3841\">\n<p data-start=\"3797\" data-end=\"3841\">A symbol of national intellectual identity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3842\" data-end=\"3882\">\n<p data-start=\"3844\" data-end=\"3882\">A neutral space for academic inquiry<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3884\" data-end=\"3999\">For critics of renaming, the institution\u2019s name represents <strong data-start=\"3943\" data-end=\"3998\">national unity rather than individual glorification<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4001\" data-end=\"4049\">Supporters of the renaming, however, argue that:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4050\" data-end=\"4279\">\n<li data-start=\"4050\" data-end=\"4106\">\n<p data-start=\"4052\" data-end=\"4106\">Many global universities are named after individuals<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4107\" data-end=\"4192\">\n<p data-start=\"4109\" data-end=\"4192\">Danquah\u2019s intellectual contributions align directly with the university\u2019s mission<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4193\" data-end=\"4279\">\n<p data-start=\"4195\" data-end=\"4279\">The current naming reflects colonial continuity rather than indigenous recognition<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"4281\" data-end=\"4284\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"4286\" data-end=\"4344\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Danquah%E2%80%93Nkrumah_Divide_A_Persistent_Fault_Line\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"4289\" data-end=\"4344\">The Danquah\u2013Nkrumah Divide: A Persistent Fault Line<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4346\" data-end=\"4548\">Mr. Annoh-Dompreh was particularly critical of what he described as Ghana\u2019s tendency to <strong data-start=\"4434\" data-end=\"4476\">frame its history as a binary conflict<\/strong> between Dr. Danquah and <strong data-start=\"4501\" data-end=\"4522\">Dr. Kwame Nkrumah<\/strong>, Ghana\u2019s first President.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4550\" data-end=\"4774\">\n<p data-start=\"4552\" data-end=\"4774\"><em data-start=\"4552\" data-end=\"4693\">\u201cOftentimes, we yield to this tendency of drawing a wedge between J.B. Danquah and Kwame Nkrumah, which in my view is totally unnecessary,\u201d<\/em> he said.<br data-start=\"4702\" data-end=\"4705\" \/><em data-start=\"4707\" data-end=\"4774\">\u201cThey all achieved significant achievements in their own rights.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4776\" data-end=\"4840\">This observation touches the core of Ghana\u2019s historical tension.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4842\" data-end=\"4850\">Nkrumah:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4851\" data-end=\"4972\">\n<li data-start=\"4851\" data-end=\"4894\">\n<p data-start=\"4853\" data-end=\"4894\">Led the Convention People\u2019s Party (CPP)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4895\" data-end=\"4927\">\n<p data-start=\"4897\" data-end=\"4927\">Championed mass mobilisation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4928\" data-end=\"4972\">\n<p data-start=\"4930\" data-end=\"4972\">Delivered political independence in 1957<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4974\" data-end=\"4982\">Danquah:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4983\" data-end=\"5100\">\n<li data-start=\"4983\" data-end=\"5015\">\n<p data-start=\"4985\" data-end=\"5015\">Championed constitutionalism<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5016\" data-end=\"5060\">\n<p data-start=\"5018\" data-end=\"5060\">Advocated gradualism and civil liberties<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5061\" data-end=\"5100\">\n<p data-start=\"5063\" data-end=\"5100\">Criticised authoritarian tendencies<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5102\" data-end=\"5288\">Rather than complementary narratives, Ghana\u2019s political memory has often presented these legacies as <strong data-start=\"5203\" data-end=\"5225\">mutually exclusive<\/strong>, reinforcing partisan identities long after both men\u2019s deaths.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5290\" data-end=\"5293\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"5295\" data-end=\"5354\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Parliamentary_Commemoration_and_Broadening_Consensus\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"5298\" data-end=\"5354\">Parliamentary Commemoration and Broadening Consensus<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5356\" data-end=\"5481\">The renewed debate followed a <strong data-start=\"5386\" data-end=\"5427\">commemorative statement in Parliament<\/strong> read by <strong data-start=\"5436\" data-end=\"5457\">Kingsley Agyemang<\/strong>, MP for Abuakwah South.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5483\" data-end=\"5576\">In his address, Mr. Agyemang emphasised that Danquah\u2019s legacy transcends partisan boundaries:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5578\" data-end=\"5756\">\n<p data-start=\"5580\" data-end=\"5756\"><em data-start=\"5580\" data-end=\"5756\">\u201cWhen clerks of Parliament, professional bodies, academic institutions and civil society converge in the assessment of one man, then history itself has rendered its verdict.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5758\" data-end=\"5782\">He described Danquah as:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5783\" data-end=\"5881\">\n<p data-start=\"5785\" data-end=\"5881\"><em data-start=\"5785\" data-end=\"5881\">\u201cA man whose life and work are acknowledged with respect by those who oppose him politically.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5883\" data-end=\"5993\">This framing sought to reposition Danquah not as a partisan symbol, but as a <strong data-start=\"5960\" data-end=\"5992\">national intellectual figure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5995\" data-end=\"5998\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"6000\" data-end=\"6052\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Preventive_Detention_Act_A_Cautionary_Legacy\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"6003\" data-end=\"6052\">Preventive Detention Act: A Cautionary Legacy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6054\" data-end=\"6257\">One of the most emotionally charged aspects of Danquah\u2019s life remains his <strong data-start=\"6128\" data-end=\"6185\">imprisonment under the Preventive Detention Act (PDA)<\/strong> during Nkrumah\u2019s presidency\u2014a law that allowed detention without trial.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6259\" data-end=\"6355\">Danquah died in detention in 1965, an episode widely regarded as one of Ghana\u2019s darkest moments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6357\" data-end=\"6421\">The parliamentary statement framed this experience as a warning:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"6423\" data-end=\"6483\">\n<p data-start=\"6425\" data-end=\"6483\"><em data-start=\"6425\" data-end=\"6483\">\u201cThe erosion of liberty rarely announces itself loudly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"6485\" data-end=\"6510\">And concluded powerfully:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"6512\" data-end=\"6650\">\n<p data-start=\"6514\" data-end=\"6650\"><em data-start=\"6514\" data-end=\"6650\">\u201cTo honour him is not merely to remember his past but to ensure that the dark chapters he endured are never re-opened in our present.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr data-start=\"6652\" data-end=\"6655\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"6657\" data-end=\"6706\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Calls_for_Inclusivity_The_NDC_Perspective\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"6660\" data-end=\"6706\">Calls for Inclusivity: The NDC Perspective<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"6708\" data-end=\"6891\">While supporting recognition for Danquah, <strong data-start=\"6750\" data-end=\"6781\">Fiifi Fiavi Phillip Buckman<\/strong>, NDC MP for Kwesimintsim, urged a <strong data-start=\"6816\" data-end=\"6852\">broader, more inclusive approach<\/strong> to honouring Ghana\u2019s founding figures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6893\" data-end=\"6940\">He acknowledged Danquah\u2019s role in naming Ghana:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"6942\" data-end=\"7011\">\n<p data-start=\"6944\" data-end=\"7011\"><em data-start=\"6944\" data-end=\"7011\">\u201cThis current Ghana was named Ghana because of what he proposed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"7013\" data-end=\"7062\">However, he warned against selective remembrance:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"7064\" data-end=\"7139\">\n<p data-start=\"7066\" data-end=\"7139\"><em data-start=\"7066\" data-end=\"7139\">\u201cWe should not only cherish people according to their political sides.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"7141\" data-end=\"7233\">Mr. Buckman specifically highlighted <strong data-start=\"7178\" data-end=\"7205\">George Alfred Paa Grant<\/strong>, the financier of the UGCC.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"7235\" data-end=\"7302\">\n<p data-start=\"7237\" data-end=\"7302\"><em
